Chishti Order

Chishti Order
   Originally established by Khwaja Abu Ishaq (d. 940) at Chisht (in Khurasan), this Sufic order was introduced into In-dia by Mu'in al-Din Chishti in the 12th century. From the monastery (khanqah) established by Mu'in al-Din Chishti at Ajmer, the Chishti order's influence spread to Delhi and from there to different parts of India during the 13th and 14th centuries. Among those who con-tributed to the popularity of the Chishti order in India, mention may be made of three distinguished successors of Mu'in al-Din Chishti: Farid al-Din Mas'ud Ganj-shikr, Nizam al-Din Auliya, and Nasir al-Din Chiragh Dehli. The Sufis of the Chishti order traced their spiritual lineage to 'Ali through Hasan Basari. There has always been a distinct tilt in the preaching of Chishti Sufis toward conceding the spiritual preeminence of 'Ali.
